Legal eagles Spend day with Cats & Dogs (NST-25.6.2010)

The lawyers and students spent the entire day cleaning cages and bathing and cleaning the animals.
AMPANG: Thirty young lawyers and 10 law students visited the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor recently and bathed the dogs and cats.

They also cleaned the cages, prepared the meals and walked the dogs.

The Kuala Lumpur Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLYLC) members and University College Sedaya International law students also helped in the preparations for SPCA's jumble sale tomorrow.

It was part of their effort to promote animal care awareness under KLYLC's animal welfare committee which was formed early this year.

The committee, which has 80 members, sent newsletters to the city's lawyers and law students inviting them to take part in the day's activities and ask for donations.

The committee aims to improve enforcement of laws governing animal welfare.

Lai Chee Hoe, president of the committee, said they would try to get more lawyers to be a part of their animal welfare programme.

There are some 7,000 young lawyers in KL.

Nicole Ang Hwee Koon, chairman of the Animal Welfare Committee, said she had always loved animals and had four dogs at home.

She said it was a joy for her to be at the centre as it was full of dogs, especially cute puppies.

SPCA front office manager Chelvy M. said the centre welcomed volunteers who were willing to provide care for the animals.

She said financial assistance would also be appreciated as the SPCA Selangor Eco Animal Centre would cost RM5 million to build. Chelvy said SPCA had raised less than half of the amount.

She added that the new centre would be equipped with a veterinary centre with a clinic, surgery rooms and post-operation wards.

It will also be equipped with spacious, open shaded cat aviaries and nine kennel blocks for dogs which will be able to accommodate 250 dogs and pups, as well as 200 cats and kittens
